Freeport may be most famous for L.L. Bean, the outdoor gear and clothier open 24/7/365, but the Maine coastal village just north of Portland boasts hundreds of outlets and boutique shops, plus a beautiful harbor and waterfront on Casco Bay.
Freeport offers visitors everything from Hilton, Best Western and Econo Lodge hotels to charming Inns and historic B&Bs. In fact Freeport is the birthplace of Maine, colonists conspired at Freeport's Jameson Tavern to secede from Massachusetts in 1789.
While visiting Freeport, be sure you explore the natural side, the Desert of Maine, Wolfe's Neck State Park that borders the sea, and Winslow Park with a beach on Casco Bay. Kayak excursions are available from Freeport's waterfront as are boat excursions.
Freeport hosts several festivals throughout the year, and free summer concerts sponsored by LL Bean. Dining in Freeport is diverse from coffee shops and cafes, brewpubs and fine dining in downtown Freeport, to lobster shacks and chowder houses by the water.
The quaint coastal village of Yarmouth is just to the south of Freeport and is home to Delorme Maps and worlds largest atlas (see photo below).
