There are may different types of kayaks. Each design has characteristics that make it better suited for its intended use. Whitewater kayaks are short and very maneuverable, Touring kayaks are long, fast and offer plenty of storage for supplies for longer trips. Fishing kayaks are very stable and include fishing equipment such as rod holders and anchors. Ask your outfitter on what design is best for your trek.
The possibilities for kayaking in Maine are endless. You can rent a kayak, take a scenic tour with a guide and even arrange for a several day long trip with overnight camping. You decide how adventuresome you want to be.
What to bring... Check with your outfitter to confirm requirements, but generally you'll need: Plenty of water, sun block, a hat, snacks and water shoes if you plan on getting out along the way. You may also want to bring a camera, but make sure you have a dry bag to put it in, to avoid water damage. Most outfitters offer these at no extra charge.
